Looking for Czechoslovakia is a documentary theater project developed by John and Samo, two friends that have been travelling throughout Czechia, Slovakia, Ukraine and Chile collecting the remains of Czechoslovakia today. The performance mixes documentary, fiction, and fantasy to explore identity, boundaries, and the meaning of a country that has disappeared.
In collaboration, John Álvarez and Samuel Černuško have been devising the show using material collected during their trips. Objects, photographs, videos, and stories will be presented on stage, sharing their journeys with the audience.
John, a Chilean scenographer and director, and Samuel, a young Slovak director, come from very different backgrounds. Despite this, they have built a strong artistic partnership during their studies in Prague. Their differences, coincidences, and shared curiosity shape the devising process and enrich the creation of the piece.
“This is not a nostalgic project. We do believe that places can exist and not exist at the same time and yet shape us, Czechoslovakia is the best example.”
The project is co-funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the City of Plzeň and the organisation Johan, a registered institute.
